What is Speed Leadership?
By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer
You know about speed dating but today I want to talk about SPEED LEADERSHIP…and this idea came from a group of Millennial Leaders… (who by the way are not kids anymore). The first Millennials will be 40 in 3 years…so they have talent and experience – they just don’t have patience. Here’s what this group told me “I didn’t go to Wharton and I don’t want to study Peter Drucker or Jack Welch. Just tell me three things I need to know about leading people. GO! One guy actually said, GO! Ok, I’m going…
#1 Don’t Micromanage people. If there is a problem, empower THEM to fix it…and you have to mean it…if you question every little question – or expect a status report on-the-hour, they won’t trust you…and they won’t be productive.
#2 Allow your team members to PUBLICLY disagree with you… and don’t make them feel as if they’re going to get fired if they do. You don’t know everything and you will always need a conscientious objector. Someone who can look you in the eye and say, “I know you’re the boss but that’s a bad idea and here’s why.” And
#3…Allow them to fail. If they’re really passionate about an idea, let ‘em try it. If they fail, at least you gave them the responsibility…AND the authority to execute. See, that’s the secret, if you give people responsibility AND authority, they think you trust their judgment – and they probably won’t sleep – until they prove their idea works.
There: was that fast enough for you? I’m exhausted.
