How to Get More “Likes” and “Fans”
By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer
I know what you want… you want a bigger social media audience for you, yourself or your business. Hi everybody, I’m Ross Shafer and I’m glad you found the Relevant Leaders Club where each week I post a new video to help you grow your business or your career. This week I want to talk about growing your social media fan base…getting more likes and followers for yourself or your business.
First, don’t hire a company who promises to do that for you. I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on SEO and I’ve hired renowned media experts and my conclusion is that (1) Social media isn’t easy and (2) NOBODY can guarantee to crack the code for you. You know better than anyone what you have to offer. The problem with Social media is that it’s made everybody think they deserve to have an ongoing reality show and only a few people are enough of a train wreck to capture the public’s attention. The rest of us lead normal lives; which usually aren’t compelling enough to attract a crowd.
So now that you know social media isn’t easy and that you’re the one who has to give people a reason to pay attention to you, let’s dig into what works. If you want more followers, more likes, and more fans – don’t go on social media and post every random thought that pops into your head and don’t post what you had for lunch. Don’t post pictures of your dog sleeping on his back and don’t post what 8th place ribbon your child brought home. You may think it’s adorable but you’re competing against millions of other people. Think about the social media landscape. We live in a “What’s in it for me?” world. You can only raise your likes and get more comments if you show more interest in your fans! You get interaction when you ask THEM questions. Now, you know THAT works because how many times have you posted things like, “My niece has a horrible cough. Do any of you know a good eye, ear, nose, and throat doctor?” The comments flood in because you’re asking your fan base for suggestions AND NOT just randomly commenting on YOUR life.
If you want to promote your business, don’t just offer a discount on a product or service. GIVE A REASON or show a step-by-step tutorial on how to use your product. Or better yet show a testimonial from someone besides you. Now you may say. “Yeah Ross, but it doesn’t look like you have a ton of views on THIS video” and you might be right if you only see this on YouTube. But I post these videos on a variety of social media networks – and sometimes I get thousands of views on Facebook and dozens of twitter shares because you and I can’t predict where people will find us (smile). We have to be everywhere THEY are. Again, make your posts about helping others, not just about what you’re doing for you.
