Even if you have a small mom-and-pop business you still have to ACT BIG. Here’s what I mean by that. I have a friend who owns a little frozen yogurt shop where we live outside of Denver. I was in getting a cup of chocolate brownie and cookie dough and I’m behind a woman who is trying to pay. My friend says, “Sorry we don’t accept American Express.” The woman has to dig around in her purse for enough quarters because she didn’t have a Visa or Mastercard. Clearly she was not happy when she left. So when it was my turn I asked my friend. “How many times a day does that happen?” He said, quite a bit but I’m not going to pay the extra .08 cents per transaction just so I can take Amex. I told him, “You just threw away a customer over .08 cents. “People who use American Express like American express. They’re saving travel points or they like paying off their balance every month. That woman was trying to give you money and you turned her away. I bet you’d pay .08 cents for a live customer in your shop wouldn’t you? Look, your customers buy how they want to buy. They may even be juggling household finances.…and if you make it hard for them to buy from you… or worse YOU refuse to take their money…they will just go elsewhere…or go on facebook and tell 800 other people. Be smart. Take Amex, Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, Discovery, Disney dollars….let people pay how they want to pay. Don’t turn away business for .08cents. This is RS for The Relevant Report.
