Have you ever been asked to do something you weren’t qualified for…and you said NO because of fear? Well, after this story maybe next time you’ll say YES. This is exactly what happened to my friend speaker/author, Dr. Nido Quebin. The board of struggling High Point University in North Carolina asked Quebin to be their next president. At first he said NO…and then after rethinking it…he took the challenge. And now Dr. Quebin has accomplished much than any other High Point President, ever. To be upfront, let me tell you that Dr. Quebin has never run a University. And, that he had never visited a single other college to see how they run things. Furthermore he has only been in the job six years. Regardless of his lack of higher education “boss” experience, Dr. Quebin raised over $700 million, he’s built 25 brand new buildings, two new stadiums & a field house, expanded the campus to 320 acres, and increased enrollment 60%.
Today, Forbes magazine ranks High Point University as one of the best in the nation. How did Dr. Quebin do it? In his own words, “I didn’t know how to run a University. I’m just a big fan of 5 star hotels and how they treat people. I wanted that experience to happen here at High Point.” If you visit HPU, you’ll see that the student housing looks like upscale hotel rooms. The pool areas are gorgeous and feature Ritz Carlton & Westin Hotel furniture. How about this…the washing machines text you when your clothes are ready. And the faculty has a shared vision of Extraordinary Excellence. So the next time someone in your company asks you to do something you don’t think you can do, realize that that someone must believe you are competent…or they wouldn’t ask. Say yes. Challenge yourself. This is Ross Shafer for the Relevant Report.
