WHAT IS A BUYER’S SECRET MOTIVE? (RLC EGO CORDLESS)
By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer
Do you really know why people are buying from you? Thanks for finding the relevant leaders club where I offer ideas and innovations to help you make more money for your company…and personal growth for yourself. Today I want to talk about your buyer’s TRUE motives for spending their money with you – because sometimes the customer research we pay for…isn’t the truth. I’ll give you an example. We live on a good-sized piece of property – but I like to do the yard work myself…and I admit I like to play with the tools.
I have a Zero Turn Mower that I use to cut the majority of our three acres…which means I need to keep 5-gallon gas cans in the garage. But for the rest of the yard I’ve gone crazy for Battery Powered machines. This is my EGO rechargeable 21” mower. But my motives weren’t to show my neighbors how much I care about reducing my carbon footprint. Because I don’t think about that. My cars prove that. I also didn’t go cordless because I’m an early adopter of technology. My motives are simple. I’m lazy! In fact, I bought two rechargeable mowers so I wouldn’t have to walk one from the front to the back yard. I got a battery powered snow blower because this is our yard in the snow. I’ve got a cordless hedge trimmer; which I’ve used to cut down small trees, and just yesterday I took delivery of a really cool backpack leaf blower – My yard work is easy now. The rechargeable batteries snap in and out of all my equipment. I never have to go to the gas station to refill my cans. There are no carburetors to get clogged with old gas. These unit fold so you can store them upright. And they work every time I turn them on. My favorite yard toys are EGO…which you can get at Lowes or Ace Hardware…because their brand promise is POWER BEYOND BELIEF. And it’s true. My EGO mower is just as powerful as any high end gas mower. The battery life goes all day…and these machines are QUIET.
I’ve mowed my lawn at 5:00am and my neighbors have no idea. So the lesson is this, “Maybe we shouldn’t put so much faith in trying to advertise the esoteric reasons – and the doing-good-for-humanity motives of our buyers. Maybe it’s as simple as guys like me being lazy, wanting quiet machinery, or not fussing with smelly gasoline in the garage. I had this conversation with the CEO of a major fast food chain who told me, “People buy our food because our ingredients are organic and non-GMO.” To which I said, “Or maybe because they are hungry and your building is three blocks from their house.” You don’t always have to overthink your buyers motives.
