How the Story Ends … Dictates Your Brand Success

Before you could read words on your own, you begged your parents: “Please, read me a story.” Most of us wanted our parents to reread our favorite tales of adventure—the same books every night. And if your exhausted mother or father skipped a page or two, you made them go back and read what they missed because you knew all of the characters and the exact progression of the story. You insisted on hearing the ending you already knew.

Why would you want to hear the same story over and over again? Because you wanted to feel the same warm and fuzzy emotions that stirred you the first time. You still do this when you play the same love songs that make you feel so warm. Even sad songs make you relive unforgettable moments in your life.

Stories take us to an emotional place of joy, peace, comfort, and understanding. We absorb many of life’s stories to heal our pain, to deal with our fears, insecurities, and doubts. Fortunately, there is no shortage of stories.

They come in the form of books, magazines, pamphlets, movies, social media posts, stage plays, podcasts, music, lectures, advertisements, medical results, comedians, nightly newscasts, and television shows—all digitally preserved for eternity and available for instant reference.

Which stories are important to us? We like stories that make sense—stories that resonate with our own lives. The ones we won’t retell are the ones with a confusing ending. A story has a better chance of going “viral” when it has a happy ending—or at least a satisfying resolution. The best stories solve problems that pit good against evil.

Personal conflict stories usually have a protagonist (a good person) and an antagonist (a bad person).

EXAMPLE #1: A girl leaves her boyfriend because he ignores her. We feel sorry for the girl and dislike the boy—until he corrects his selfish ways and wins her back.

EXAMPLE #2: A mother’s 4-year-old child is kidnapped and held for ransom—until she battles insurmountable odds to rescue her daughter safely.

The same “story rules” apply to commerce. If you listen to an emotionally charged third-party product or service endorsement and the story captures your attention, you may be moved to buy. Next, you decide how much you’ll spend. Finally, you decide how soon you’ll buy.

Which brings us to your profession. Whatever service you provide—or maybe you sell a product—you will be more successful if you can tell an honest, convincing, and emotional story about how you can help others:

THE FORMULA

Establish the problem with genuine emotion.

Offer the solution.

Tell potential customers how to find you.

SUSAN: My plantar fasciitis had become so painful it was impossible to play with my grandkids. So, I tried Invisible Cloud Shoe Inserts for a month. The pain is gone. Want to get your life back? Click on this link. There is no risk.

While the story is short, it promises to solve a debilitating problem with a satisfying resolution. In story terms, “Susan” is the protagonist. We like her, and we want her to be pain-free. The inflamed tendons in her feet are the antagonists. The rescue is the Invisible Cloud Shoe Inserts.

Tom Brady: A Leadership Case Study in Excellence and Influence

As a former college football player and leadership consultant to Fortune 500 companies for over 22 years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe a wide range of leadership styles. One individual who stands out as a prime example of what true leadership looks like, both on and off the field, is NFL quarterback Tom Brady. Known as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time), Brady’s leadership extends far beyond football and offers valuable lessons for business leaders navigating the complexities of today’s world.

Though Brady retired from professional football in 2023, his leadership principles remain incredibly relevant as we move further into 2025. As organizations face new challenges—from the rise of hybrid work models to economic instability—Brady’s leadership lessons continue to shine.

Managers vs. Leaders: The Tom Brady Approach

In traditional corporate environments, managers often “bark orders” and expect employees to follow based on their seniority. Tom Brady, with more seniority than any NFL player in history, demonstrates a stark contrast to this “Command and Control” leadership style. While managers often rely on authority to enforce compliance, Brady’s teammates follow him not because they have to, but because he is a master encourager.

Brady’s leadership is built on consistency, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. He leads by example, constantly pushing himself to be better through relentless study and training. His ability to coach teammates to be their best selves—both on and off the field—is what makes him an extraordinary leader in sports and beyond.

The difference between managers and leaders becomes clear when examining Brady’s impact. Managers may focus on managing tasks and ensuring deadlines are met, but leaders, like Brady, inspire their teams to push boundaries, achieve greatness, and continually evolve. This type of leadership is particularly relevant in 2025, when businesses face a landscape marked by rapid technological advancements and the challenge of adapting to shifting market demands. True leadership, as Brady demonstrates, is about fostering engagement and inspiring people to rise above the status quo.

The Business Future of Tom Brady

As we look toward 2025 and beyond, one question remains: what’s next for Tom Brady? Many business leaders are watching closely to see if Brady will follow in the footsteps of former NFL quarterback Roger Staubach, who successfully transitioned into business after retiring from football. Staubach applied the leadership principles he honed on the field to build a thriving real estate empire, eventually selling his company for $613 million in 2008.

If Brady chooses to pursue a similar path, we can expect him to succeed in whatever venture he embarks on. His relentless focus on personal and professional growth, along with his natural ability to inspire and motivate, will undoubtedly translate well into the business world. Whether Brady enters the world of entrepreneurship, corporate leadership, or coaching, his success will not be measured by his title, but by the impact he has on the people he leads. If Brady decides to step into a business role, he would bring a unique set of qualities—emotional intelligence, persistence, and the ability to lead through challenges—that are essential for modern business success.

Leadership Under Pressure: What Business Leaders Can Learn from Brady

The ability to lead under pressure is a timeless trait. In 2025, leaders are tasked with navigating a rapidly changing business landscape that includes economic uncertainty, technological disruptions, and shifting workforce dynamics. Just like Brady and Staubach did on the field, today’s leaders must remain unshakable when faced with intense pressure and challenge.

Brady’s resilience was most evident when he was asked about retiring after the New England Patriots’ tough 30-27 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. His response was, “I can’t say. I don’t want to make a permanent decision over a temporary emotion.” This level of emotional intelligence remains a defining trait for leaders, especially as business landscapes become more volatile and unpredictable in 2025.

Brady’s ability to stay calm and focused when under pressure serves as a model for business leaders facing challenges in the modern world. Leading with confidence during high-stakes situations, keeping a level head, and making informed decisions are crucial to success in 2025’s fast-paced business environment.

Tom Brady’s Leadership Style is Shaping the Future of Business

Tom Brady’s leadership is about more than just sports victories—it’s about creating cultures of high performance through empathy, encouragement, and consistent dedication. Today, in a post-pandemic world where hybrid work and remote teams are common, leadership styles that encourage self-motivation, accountability, and adaptability are more important than ever.

Brady’s leadership is rooted in his ability to adapt to changing circumstances, a skill that will continue to serve him and those who follow his principles in the future. Whether leading a team on the football field or navigating the complexities of modern business, Brady’s philosophy will continue to shape leaders in 2025 and beyond.

Ready to Take Your Leadership to the Next Level?

What if your success wasn’t based on your education, talent, or even your network—but your integrity? After delivering a keynote in Detroit, I met a CEO whose billion-dollar business thrives on one simple, old-school principle: surround yourself only with people of unshakable integrity.

After a keynote presentation in Detroit, I sat next to a man who radiated confidence, kindness, and a sense of clarity that was hard to ignore. At 61, he looked fit, carried himself with quiet authority, and had just accepted a prestigious award for “Best in the Industry” sales growth. For the sake of this story, we’ll call him Mr. Toplin—a CEO who leads a large household appliance manufacturing firm based in eastern Michigan.

This wasn’t a flashy Silicon Valley startup or a viral consumer tech brand. His company sells practical, reliable products we all use—but rarely rave about. Yet what sets this company apart is that it has achieved an unprecedented 9 years of 40% year-over-year growth. That’s not just impressive—it’s elite.

Curious, I asked Mr. Toplin what he believes is the #1 reason for this level of sustained success. Without hesitation, he replied:

“We only hire and associate with people who have 100% integrity.”

The Simple Formula Behind Extraordinary Results

To Mr. Toplin, integrity isn’t a buzzword. It’s the core principle behind every hiring decision, leadership choice, and business transaction. I pressed further: What exactly does “integrity” mean in his world?

He replied, “It means surrounding yourself only with people who are solid in character. They never lie. They don’t cheat. They don’t steal. They don’t deceive others to get what they want. If they see dishonesty, they walk away—even if it’s from a friend or peer.”

He went on to explain that being around people with flexible morality is a risk—to your business, your culture, and your peace of mind. He’s willing to pay more to bring on talent that demonstrates not just skill, but unquestionable character. Why? Because trust builds loyalty, and loyalty fuels performance.

Can You Pass the Integrity Test?

Let’s take a moment to reflect on Mr. Toplin’s “Integrity Test.” Ask yourself:

Have you ever lied for personal gain?

Have you bent the truth to avoid consequences?

Have you ever gone along with unethical behavior due to peer pressure?

Have you compromised your principles to get something you really wanted?

Have you lost sleep fearing you’d be exposed?

Have you damaged a relationship through dishonesty?

If any of these made you squirm, you’re not alone. But facing these questions head-on is how we grow. It’s how we restore the foundation of trust, both in business and in life.

Integrity Isn’t Soft. It’s Strategic.

One of the most powerful takeaways from our 22-minute conversation was this: Success favors the trusted.
Mr. Toplin’s approach proves that success doesn’t have to come from cutthroat tactics or clever maneuvering. It can come from something profoundly simple—living and leading with integrity.

When you’re honest in your actions, you eliminate the mental drain of cover-ups and the emotional stress of regret. You stop wasting energy protecting lies and start investing that energy into building something real.

The Business Impact of Character-First Culture

Here’s the real kicker: This character-based approach has helped his company become a magnet for top talent in a notoriously tight labor market. High-performing employees want to work in a culture that’s consistent, trustworthy, and authentic. Customers feel the difference, too.

While other companies may fall into scandals or lose customer trust through careless behavior, his company has built a brand of predictability and respect—the true currency of long-term business.

Final Thoughts: Integrity is Your Legacy

Mr. Toplin doesn’t just talk the talk—he lives it. He doesn’t lie to his wife, his children, or his staff. He doesn’t cut corners in business, even when it costs him. And he sleeps well at night knowing that his success hasn’t come at the expense of his conscience.

“I may not always get what I want,” he told me, “but I refuse to trade a billion-dollar deal for a lifetime of regret.”

That mindset is rare. And that’s why it’s so powerful.

Ask yourself: What legacy are you building? Would your employees, your family, or your customers say they trust you—completely?

The road to lasting success isn’t paved with shortcuts. It’s built on character, consistency, and integrity.

Want to inspire your team with more real-world leadership stories?
Visit RossShafer.com for keynote presentations and business culture insights.

From Pet Shop Manager to Late-Night Talk Show Host: How Thinking Bigger Changed Everything

Why would I, an overweight, scraggly-bearded Pet Shop manager, ever think I had the qualifications to compete as a late-night talk show host against legends like David Letterman and Johnny Carson?

The answer is simple: I believed no dream was too far away. What if I started thinking bigger? Here’s how thinking outside the box and embracing unexpected opportunities transformed my life, from managing a stereo and pet shop in Puyallup, Washington, to landing my own talk show.

The Pet Shop that Changed Everything

Right out of college, I teamed up with a friend and opened Sounds OK—America’s only stereo and pet shop, located in the quirky little town of Puyallup, Washington.

What started as a creative attempt to blend high-end audio equipment with adorable puppies turned into a crash course in business, chaos, and resilience. The “Pet Fashion Shows” and “Hamster Drag Races” were fun. The daily poop scooping? Not so much.

Between the parrot that murdered a cockatiel and the boa constrictor who ate seven parakeets in front of children, I realized this wasn’t sustainable—or fulfilling. I had bigger dreams.

The Mount St. Helens Moment

On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, and so did I.

Everyone stood on the roofs of our homes and witnessed a gigantic mushroom cloud fill the sky. Exactly like the ones you’ve seen in movies. We were convinced that we were going to be victims of a full-on nuclear holocaust. (We learned later that day that Mt. St Helens had blown her stack.) Watching the ash fall like radioactive snow, I thought, “Is this it? I’ve peaked managing a pet store?”

That surreal moment was my turning point. I vowed to do something bigger with my life. No more excuses. No more settling. Just action fueled by a crazy dream.

From Lazy Boy to Late Night

The highlight of my weeknights was collapsing into my garage-sale-Lazy Boy recliner to watch Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. I’d forget my day, marvel at the celebrities he’d interview, and howl when he did impressions in funny costumes. In my mind, Johnny Carson had the coolest job in the world. One night, after another long day managing the pet store, I watched Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. He had the coolest job in the world, and I wanted it.

Fast forward six years later, I was in direct competition with Johnny Carson as the host of the FOX Late Show. I even received a handwritten note from him: “I heard Rupert Murdoch (who owned FOX) may buy NBC. If that’s the case I’ll see you at the Christmas party.”

Thinking Bigger Changes Everything

That leap—from fish tanks to fame—was only possible because I stopped playing small.

What about you?

Do you feel stuck in a job you’ve outgrown?

Are you afraid to chase your dream because it seems too far-fetched?

Have you convinced yourself it’s too late to start over?

Here’s the truth: It’s not.

You don’t need everything figured out. Just the courage to start. Sometimes, the best way to move forward is to take that first step—no matter how small—and challenge yourself to think bigger. If an overweight, scraggly-bearded pet shop manager can become a national talk show host, what’s stopping you?

How to Be a Better Negotiator: 4 ways to Close the Deal

By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer

Are you a decent negotiator—but not quite great? Do you want to land better deals in business, real estate, or partnerships without feeling like you’re getting taken for a ride?

Whether you’re buying a business, securing a lease, or negotiating better vendor terms, becoming a better negotiator is a learnable skill. And I’ve got five practical negotiation tactics that will help you get what you want—without burning bridges.

The ability to negotiate well isn’t about being aggressive—it’s about being smart, strategic, and empathetic. Whether you’re sealing a deal at the boardroom table or bargaining over coffee, these four proven negotiation tips will help you close more deals and build stronger business relationships.

1. Start by Negotiating from the Seller’s Point of View

Didn’t expect that, did you?

Too often, people walk into a negotiation focused entirely on their wants. Big mistake. If you want to make a deal that sticks, ask yourself:
What does the seller really want?

Are they looking for quick cash? Trying to dissolve a business partnership? Hoping to eliminate debt? Once you uncover the seller’s true motivations, you’ll be better positioned to offer a deal that works for both parties—and avoid the common missteps that can kill the deal early.

2. Don’t Be Desperate—Confidence Wins Deals

Desperation is loud. It shows in your voice, your offers, and even your posture. When you look too eager, you lose leverage—and potentially overpay.

Instead, walk in calm, prepared, and willing to walk away. This is especially important when you’re negotiating a business acquisition, lease, or vendor agreement. When you signal that you’re not dependent on this particular deal, you instantly gain power.

That doesn’t mean playing games—it means knowing your numbers and understanding the marketplace. Spend time researching comparable deals in your industry so you can confidently justify your offer.

Additionally, know your walk-away point. That’s the maximum you’re willing to pay or the minimum you’ll accept. Without that, emotions can easily push you into overcommitting. The best negotiators expect alternatives and believe they’ll find other opportunities.

For a deeper dive into this mindset, check out Forbes’ guide to business negotiation.

3. Offer Something Different (Especially When Others Are Competing on Price)

In a crowded negotiation, the winning offer isn’t always the highest—it’s often the most creative.

If others are driving up the price, don’t join the feeding frenzy. Instead, give the seller reasons to choose you:

Offer a faster closing date

Let them keep a sentimental item

Volunteer to help with asset liquidation at no charge

Make your offer memorable. Show them what they’d lose by going with someone else.

4. Keep It Friendly—Your Reputation Is Everything

A guy once told me, “When I negotiate, I’m a Grizzly Bear.” My response? “Most people avoid bears.”

Don’t be a bear. Be someone sellers want to do business with again.

A tough negotiator isn’t someone who dominates the room—it’s someone who builds trust, maintains integrity, and leaves both sides feeling like they won. Fair and friendly will get you further than aggressive and abrasive—especially in long-term business.

Let’s Review:

Negotiate from the seller’s point of view

Don’t be desperate—stay cool, stay in control

Offer more than money—get creative

Be fair, be friendly, be someone they recommend

As you know, at the very core of great leadership is being able to make good decisions every day. How can you do that? I suggest that you start preparing your decisions and your actions well in advance. Great leaders premeditate how they will respond to every situation so they are never surprised, they’re never shocked and they know if they already know how they will respond to all kinds of scenarios. They won’t have to make crucial decisions under pressure or in some cases, a crisis.

How Can Leaders Make Better Decisions?

By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer

At the core of effective leadership lies one critical skill: decision-making. Every day, leaders are tasked with making dozens—sometimes hundreds—of decisions that influence their teams, their organizations, and their bottom line. But the best leaders don’t just react; they premeditate.

Good decisions aren’t made on the fly. They’re prepared in advance, so when the pressure is high or a crisis hits, great leaders don’t panic—they act with clarity, confidence, and control.

Great Leaders Pre-Plan Their Responses

If you’ve ever watched an NFL game, you’ve seen this principle in action. Coaches stand on the sidelines with laminated play sheets that outline responses for every possible scenario. Quarterbacks wear wristbands with abbreviated strategies so they can make instant, informed decisions based on how the defense is lined up.

Why do they do this? Because high-stakes decisions are too important to leave to improvisation.

Similarly, great business leaders develop their own playbooks. They anticipate challenges and rehearse how they’ll respond long before those problems arise. When you prepare this way, you’re never caught off guard—and you always look smart, calm, and capable in front of your stakeholders and team.

Become the AI of Your Own Organization

Think of yourself like an AI assistant—like Siri or IBM’s Watson. These systems don’t guess; they rely on massive databases of potential questions and preprogrammed responses. As a leader, you should build your own internal database of decisions and outcomes.

Start by asking yourself (and other seasoned leaders):

What tough decisions have I had to make in the past?

What unexpected issues have blindsided my peers?

What recurring problems demand consistent responses?

Create a running list of potential crises, obstacles, or operational breakdowns. Examples might include:

What if a team member leaks confidential information on social media?

What’s the protocol if a major shipment is delayed or canceled?

How will you respond to public-facing mistakes or bad press?

You don’t have to memorize it all—keep notes in your phone or in a shared decision-making document you can reference quickly.

Don’t Overthink—Decide and Move On

Once you make a decision, stick to it. Avoid the trap of second-guessing or endlessly rehashing your choices. Even if a decision isn’t popular, if it’s rooted in facts and forethought, trust yourself.

Jim Barksdale, former CEO of Netscape (which he sold to AOL for $4.2 billion), had a famously simple approach to leadership decisions. His Three Rules of Business offer timeless wisdom:

If you see a snake, kill it.

Don’t play with dead snakes.

All opportunities start out looking like snakes.

In short: Take action, don’t dwell, and learn to see opportunity in uncertainty.

Final Thought: Smart Decisions Aren’t Reactive—They’re Intentional

The difference between average leaders and exceptional ones comes down to preparation. When you pre-meditate your decisions, you don’t just solve problems—you inspire trust, reduce chaos, and drive results. Whether you’re facing everyday challenges or once-in-a-career crises, the best leaders aren’t guessing. They’re ready. They’re decisive. And most importantly—they’re respected for it.

This week I want to talk about why coaches are important and why wildly successful leaders still feel the need to be coached. You first introduction to coaching was a kid playing sports. We all had bad coaches who thought leadership was yelling… so the word coach still makes you cringe. But if you had a good coach, you learned discipline from the coach, you learned to push yourself further when you felt like quitting, and a good coach taught you skills and techniques that made you better than you ever thought you could be.

Why Do Top Leaders Still Need Coaching?

By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer

Welcome to the Relevant Leaders Club, where I post weekly videos to help you grow your business, elevate your leadership, and accelerate your career.

This week, we’re tackling a question that catches many professionals off guard:

“Why would a top CEO, elite athlete, or world-class entrepreneur still need a coach?”

If you’re already successful, shouldn’t you be done with coaching?
Absolutely not.

In fact, the best leaders in the world rely on coaching more than ever—because they understand that greatness is a moving target.

Your First Coach Set the Tone

Think back to when you were a kid playing sports.
Chances are, you had a coach. Maybe they yelled too much and made you cringe. Or maybe they helped you push past your limits, taught you discipline, and showed you how to be better than you thought possible.

I played football throughout high school and college. My best coaches knew how to push and praise me at the right time. When I slacked off, they’d get in my face and say:

“Shafer, I know you can do better than that—because I’ve seen you do it.”

That kind of accountability sticks with you.

Great Coaches Know It’s All About Performance

Some people think coaches are only necessary for teams—not individuals. That’s a myth.

Every top performer obsesses over their individual game. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur or a CEO leading a massive organization, you’re still responsible for your personal performance. Coaches help you fine-tune your skills so that you can contribute to the overall victory.

Even individual sports stars rely on coaches.

A few years ago, I shared the stage with pro golfer Greg Norman. He told me that even at his peak—earning millions each year—he still had a coach reviewing his swing and keeping his mental game sharp.

Why? Because top performers never stop improving.

Smart Leaders Know They Can’t See Everything

On the flip side, some leaders refuse coaching. They believe they know it all and spend more time instructing than learning.

That’s not leadership—that’s arrogance.
And arrogance will sink a company faster than bad budgeting.

No leader can stay objective 100% of the time. There are too many reports, too many meetings, too many fires to put out. You need someone who:

Understands your strengths and blind spots

Keeps you focused on long-term goals

Reminds you to lead ethically, clearly, and consistently

Leadership is demanding, but you don’t have to do it alone.

Who Coaches the Coaches?

Every great leader has a trusted advisor:

The President has a cabinet

An NFL coach has assistant coaches and a GM

A public company has a board of directors

So, what about you?

Do you have a trusted confidant who can coach you through uncertainty?

Someone who helps you weigh bold ideas and risky moves?

Someone who wants to see you succeed—but won’t sugarcoat the truth?

If so, congratulations—you’ve conquered ego.
If not, it might be time to find the right coach.

How to Choose the Right Leadership Coach

If you’re considering coaching, start by asking yourself:

Do I trust this person to speak truthfully—even when it’s hard to hear?

Do I feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable and honest?

Do they understand my strengths and weaknesses?

Are they invested in my growth without judgment?

Your coach could be someone you already know. But whether they’re internal or external, you must have rapport. Otherwise, every session will feel painful—and you’ll eventually quit.

What a Great Leadership Coach Will Do for You

A good coach doesn’t tell you what to do. They guide you to do your best work.

Here’s what to expect:

Keep you aligned with your values and ethics

Help you communicate better

Promote clarity and transparency

Reduce team friction

Challenge your thinking and sharpen your decision-making

Bottom line: A smart, trusted coach helps you become the strongest version of yourself.

Today, I want to talk about how to motivate your team…even when you don’t feel like it. You’ve heard the cliché “it’s lonely it is at The Top.” It’s true. Until you are sitting in the leader’s chair you never realize how isolated it can feel. Truth is though, even top tier leaders need a little motivation and validation - at the same exact time you’re supposed to be leading the troops. So how do you pull that off?

You’ve heard it before: “It’s lonely at the top.” And if you’re in a leadership role, you know how true that can be. As a leader, you’re expected to project confidence, offer solutions, and maintain team morale—even on days when your own motivation has completely flatlined.

So how do you motivate your team when you’re running on empty? More importantly, how do you motivate yourself in the moments when burnout, overwhelm, or imposter syndrome creeps in?

Let me give you three tactics that work. Not theory—real-life strategies that help leaders stay driven and keep their teams inspired.

1. Stop Complaining and Blaming

First, take this to heart: You set the tone. As a leader, your attitude is contagious. That means no complaining. No blaming. If your team sees you whining about tough circumstances or throwing others under the bus, they’ll follow suit.

On the flip side, when you take responsibility for your energy, own your mistakes, and show up with integrity—even when it’s hard—you build a culture of accountability and resilience. People take cues from how you act, not just what you say. That’s leadership.

2. Borrow Ideas From Outside Your Industry

One of the best ways to re-energize your thinking is by going outside your bubble. Literally.

Here’s a trick I use: Go to the “wrong” meetings. Find a hotel conference room hosting an event totally unrelated to your field. Wait for attendees to file in, then slide into the back row. Listen. Observe. You’ll be amazed at how often you hear an idea, strategy, or structure that you can adapt for your own business.

Cross-industry innovation is the birthplace of breakthroughs. IDEO’s approach to design thinking emphasizes this kind of lateral exploration—and it’s how some of the world’s most successful companies find fresh inspiration.

3. Share Your Failures

Motivation doesn’t always come from winning. It often comes from knowing we can recover from failure.

As a leader, being honest about your mistakes creates psychological safety for your team. They realize you’re human. You’ve failed. You’ve learned. You’ve grown. And because you’re transparent about that journey, they’ll trust you more—and take more initiative themselves.

Show them how you turned a loss into a lesson. Don’t just lead with the highlight reel. Lead with your humanity. That’s the path to an engaged, motivated culture.

Final Thought: Leadership is a Performance

Motivation is not always a natural feeling—it’s a skill. Some days, you’ll have to put on the suit, smile for your team, and lead even when your tank is empty. But leadership is a performance that, when done with purpose and intention, can reignite your own inner fire in the process.

And here’s the truth: You don’t have to fake it. You just have to be real, present, and willing to keep learning.

Watch the full video for Ross’s motivational leadership insights
