<p class="p1">Why would I, an overweight, scraggly-bearded Pet Shop manager, ever think I had the qualifications to compete as a late-night talk show host against legends like David Letterman and Johnny Carson?</p>
<p class="p1">The answer is simple: I believed no dream was too far away. What if I started thinking bigger? Here&#8217;s how thinking outside the box and embracing unexpected opportunities transformed my life, from managing a stereo and pet shop in Puyallup, Washington, to landing my own talk show.</p>
<h2>The Pet Shop that Changed Everything</h2>
<p class="" data-start="1220" data-end="1393">Right out of college, I teamed up with a friend and opened <em data-start="1279" data-end="1290">Sounds OK</em>—America’s only stereo and pet shop, located in the quirky little town of Puyallup, Washington.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1395" data-end="1653">What started as a creative attempt to blend high-end audio equipment with adorable puppies turned into a crash course in business, chaos, and resilience. The &#8220;Pet Fashion Shows&#8221; and &#8220;Hamster Drag Races&#8221; were fun. The daily poop scooping? Not so much.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1655" data-end="1848">Between the parrot that murdered a cockatiel and the boa constrictor who ate seven parakeets in front of children, I realized this wasn’t sustainable—or fulfilling. I had bigger dreams.</p>
<h2 data-start="1978" data-end="2024">The Mount St. Helens Moment</h2>
<p class="" data-start="2025" data-end="2439">On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, and so did I.</p>
<p class="" data-start="2025" data-end="2439">Everyone<span class="s1"> stood on the roofs of our homes and witnessed a gigantic mushroom cloud fill the sky. Exactly like the ones you&#8217;ve seen in movies. We were convinced that we were going to be victims of a full-on nuclear holocaust. (We learned <i>later </i>that day that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_eruption_of_Mount_St._Helens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mt. St Helens had blown her stack</a>.) </span>Watching the ash fall like radioactive snow, I thought, “Is this it? I’ve peaked managing a pet store?”</p>
<p class="" data-start="2058" data-end="2224">That surreal moment was my turning point. I vowed to do something bigger with my life. No more excuses. No more settling. Just action fueled by a crazy dream.</p>
<h2 data-start="3077" data-end="3132">From Lazy Boy to Late Night</h2>
<p class="" data-start="3133" data-end="3533"><span class="s1">The highlight of my weeknights was collapsing into my garage-sale-Lazy Boy recliner to watch <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Carson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Johnny Carson on <i>The Tonight Show</i>.</a> I’d forget my day, marvel at the celebrities he’d interview, and howl when he did impressions in funny costumes. In my mind, Johnny Carson had the coolest job in the world.  </span>One night, after another long day managing the pet store, I watched Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. He had the coolest job in the world, and I wanted it.</p>
<p class="" data-start="3133" data-end="3533">Fast forward six years later, I was in direct competition with Johnny Carson as the host of the <em data-start="3373" data-end="3388">FOX Late Show</em>. <span class="s1">I even received a handwritten note from him: <em>&#8220;I heard Rupert Murdoch (who owned FOX) may buy NBC. If that&#8217;s the case I&#8217;ll see you at the Christmas party.&#8221;</em> </span></p>
<h2 class="" data-start="2688" data-end="2725">Thinking Bigger Changes Everything</h2>
<p class="" data-start="2727" data-end="2811">That leap—from fish tanks to fame—was only possible because I stopped playing small.</p>

<p data-start="413" data-end="705">The truth is, writing your own book—especially if you&#8217;re planning to self-publish—doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. Whether you&#8217;re an entrepreneur, speaker, or creative professional, a book is one of the best ways to establish authority, generate leads, and create passive income.</p>
<p data-start="707" data-end="861">After writing 10 books and 24  Human Resource training film scripts, I’ve created a repeatable process that works. Here’s how to write and publish your book step-by-step.</p>
<h2 data-start="868" data-end="916">1. Start with the Content: Capture Everything</h2>
<p data-start="918" data-end="1235">Before you worry about structure, editing, or publishing platforms, get your ideas out of your head and onto the page. Don’t edit while you write. Just dump every thought, story, lesson, or framework you want to include—on a yellow pad, in Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, or using voice-to-text tools on your device.</p>
<p data-start="1237" data-end="1341">Once you&#8217;ve captured everything, import your text into a single document. You can always organize later.</p>
<h2 data-start="1480" data-end="1508">2. Organize Your Material</h2>
<p data-start="1510" data-end="1652">When you’re ready, begin grouping your ideas into chapters or themes. A <strong data-start="1582" data-end="1603">table of contents</strong> helps both you and your readers follow the flow.</p>
<p data-start="1654" data-end="1762">Let your content drive the structure. Don’t stress about perfection—your editor will help smooth things out.</p>
<h2 data-start="1769" data-end="1809">3. Hire an Editor (Yes, You Need One)</h2>
<p data-start="1811" data-end="2009">Even if you’re a strong writer, a professional editor can polish grammar, fix structure, and catch what you missed. Expect to pay around $300 for a 13,000-word manuscript—more words = more cost.</p>

I’m talking to you—the dreamers, the doers, and the side-hustlers who’ve heard that <a href="https://www.chamberofcommerce.org/small-business-statistics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em data-start="569" data-end="617">50% of small businesses fail within five years</em> </a>and are rightfully cautious.</p>
<p data-start="648" data-end="778">Yes, that statistic is true. But let’s talk about why they fail—and more importantly, how <em data-start="742" data-end="747">you</em> can beat the odds and succeed.</p>
<h2 data-start="785" data-end="829">Why Do Half of All Small Businesses Fail?</h2>
<p data-start="831" data-end="1114">Simple. They run out of money.<br data-start="861" data-end="864" />That’s why you see so many entrepreneurs going on shows like <a href="https://abc.com/show/535e2b07-18a9-4d94-9803-9ed8257b9d23" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong data-start="925" data-end="975">Shark Tank</strong></a>—they need funding to stay alive. But let’s say the Sharks don’t bite. That’s OK. You can still make it&#8230; if you understand cash flow.</p>
<h2 data-start="1121" data-end="1171">Cash Flow: The Lifeblood of Your Business</h2>
<p data-start="1173" data-end="1431"><strong data-start="1173" data-end="1186">Cash flow</strong> is the money coming in versus the money going out. Outflows include rent, licenses, internet, taxes, and any equipment or help you need to launch. Just like running a household, you won’t survive if you&#8217;re spending more than you&#8217;re bringing in.</p>
<p data-start="1433" data-end="1566">Poor cash management is the #1 reason small businesses go bankrupt. So here’s my first hard truth: <strong>Don’t quit your day job.</strong></p>
<p data-start="1568" data-end="1713">You’ll need that steady income to pay your existing bills while your business gets off the ground. Your startup isn’t going to support you—<em data-start="1707" data-end="1713">yet.</em></p>
<h2 data-start="1720" data-end="1765">Start Small. Start Smart. Start From Home.</h2>
<p data-start="1767" data-end="1925">I recommend starting your small business at home or online. That way, your overhead stays low. Work at night. Get up an hour earlier. Just carve out the time.</p>
<p data-start="1927" data-end="2011">Why online? Because you don’t even know yet if your product or service is in demand.</p>

<p data-start="1793" data-end="1905">That doesn&#8217;t mean playing games—it means <em data-start="700" data-end="722">knowing your numbers</em> and understanding the marketplace. Spend time researching comparable deals in your industry so you can confidently justify your offer.</p>
<p data-start="1793" data-end="1905">Additionally, know your <em data-start="1059" data-end="1076">walk-away point</em>. That’s the maximum you’re willing to pay or the minimum you’ll accept. Without that, emotions can easily push you into overcommitting. The best negotiators <em data-start="1234" data-end="1255">expect alternatives</em> and believe they’ll find other opportunities.</p>

<p data-start="3422" data-end="3680">A tough negotiator isn’t someone who dominates the room—it’s someone who <em data-start="3495" data-end="3509">builds trust</em>, maintains integrity, and leaves both sides feeling like they won. Fair and friendly will get you further than aggressive and abrasive—<em data-start="3645" data-end="3680">especially in long-term business.</em></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2><strong>Do You Have Insecurities? Here’s Why They Might Be Your Secret Weapon</strong></h2>

<p data-start="709" data-end="898">Are you insecure about some aspect of your life? Maybe it&#8217;s your appearance, your intelligence, or your financial situation. You’re not alone. But more importantly, you’re not doomed by it.</p>
<p data-start="900" data-end="1058">This week, I want to talk openly about insecurities—and more specifically, how to manage them in a way that drives personal growth and leadership success.</p>
<p data-start="1060" data-end="1419">Let’s get one thing straight: you may never completely eliminate the fear of not being smart enough, attractive enough, wealthy enough, or talented enough. However, what you <em data-start="1234" data-end="1239">can</em> do is manage those feelings and use them to your advantage. And I know this to be true because I’ve met hundreds of highly successful people who <em data-start="1385" data-end="1419">still struggle with self-esteem.</em></p>
<p data-start="1421" data-end="1687">I’m fortunate to work as a keynote speaker and consultant with Fortune 500 executives, world leaders, and A-list celebrities. From the outside, they often seem flawless—confident, composed, and totally in control. But behind closed doors, it’s a different story.</p>
<p data-start="1689" data-end="1981">Take, for example, a Fortune 100 CEO I met—not naming names, but you’d recognize him immediately. He leaned in and confessed, “I just hope I can retire before anyone figures out how dumb I am about technology.” This man oversees a global company&#8230; yet fears being found out as a tech novice.</p>
<p data-start="1983" data-end="2255">Actor Alexander Skarsgård once admitted: “Most days, I feel like the ugliest man on the planet.” And Sandra Bullock, one of Hollywood’s most successful actresses, has said, “I’m optimistic, but I’m also terribly afraid and insecure.”</p>
<p data-start="2257" data-end="2709">Even inventors and innovators haven’t escaped the trap of self-doubt. Thomas Edison, who brought us the light bulb and motion pictures, was insecure about his intelligence because he only attended school for a total of three months. Abraham Lincoln—often cited as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents—grappled with deep feelings of abandonment after losing his mother at age nine, and he reportedly hated the sound of his own high-pitched voice.</p>
<p data-start="2711" data-end="2803">If <em data-start="2714" data-end="2720">they</em> felt this way, it stands to reason that all of us might experience similar doubts.</p>
<p data-start="2805" data-end="2865">So why do insecurities linger even after we achieve success?</p>
<p data-start="2867" data-end="3167">It usually traces back to childhood experiences and limiting beliefs. Maybe someone told you that you weren&#8217;t good enough, smart enough, or talented enough—and a part of you still believes them. We carry those memories and criticisms like emotional luggage, even when we know they don’t serve us.</p>
<p data-start="3169" data-end="3460">As author Brené Brown says in her groundbreaking <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_the_power_of_vulnerability" target="_blank" rel="noopener">talk on vulnerability</a>, “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it.”</p>
<p data-start="3462" data-end="3712">Here’s the upside: insecurity isn’t just normal—it can be incredibly productive. Insecurity is often the spark that drives us to become stronger, more skilled, and more resilient. It pushes us to overprepare, to outperform, and to outgrow our doubts.</p>
<p data-start="3714" data-end="3867">The trick is to acknowledge your insecurities without letting them define you. Let them serve as your personal homework—your roadmap for improvement.</p>
<p data-start="3869" data-end="4056">If you’ve ever felt insecure before stepping onto a stage, starting a new job, or speaking up in a meeting, take heart. Those feelings don’t mean you’re failing. They mean you’re growing.</p>

You often have just a few seconds to make a memorable impact, and your pitch is your best chance to do that with confidence and clarity.</p>
<p data-start="711" data-end="740">A strong elevator pitch allows you to quickly communicate who you are, what you do, and—most importantly—how you create value for others. It helps you establish credibility, spark curiosity, and open the door to deeper conversations that can lead to job opportunities, partnerships, or new clients. Whether you&#8217;re speaking to a potential employer, investor, or collaborator, a well-practiced pitch ensures you&#8217;re never caught off guard and always ready to present yourself with purpose.</p>

The term was coined when skyscrapers made it possible to pitch someone during a short elevator ride—usually 30 seconds or less.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1031" data-end="1109">It’s still one of the most important tools in your business or career toolkit.</p>
<h2 class="" data-start="1111" data-end="1144">Why Most Elevator Pitches Fail</h2>
<p class="" data-start="1572" data-end="1808">Let’s be honest. Most elevator pitches fail because they’re boring, vague, or filled with corporate jargon. If you say, <em data-start="1692" data-end="1761">“I’m a senior solutions specialist in operational systems support,”</em> you’ve likely lost your listener by word four.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1810" data-end="1864">The truth is, job titles don’t sell. Solutions do.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1866" data-end="2050">You have to make your pitch about them, not just about you. You’re not trying to impress people with your resume—you’re trying to make them curious enough to ask, <em data-start="2033" data-end="2050">“Tell me more.”</em></p>

We determine if a player can safely return to the game or if it’s time to begin recovery.”</p>

<p class="" data-start="2836" data-end="3003"><strong data-start="2836" data-end="2863">Step 3 – The Relevance:</strong><br data-start="2863" data-end="2866" />“We now provide that same rapid injury analysis for workplace injuries. We help businesses reduce downtime and lower healthcare costs.”</p>

<p class="" data-start="3005" data-end="3073">That’s infinitely better than, <em data-start="3036" data-end="3066">“I work in medical testing,”</em> right?</p>
<h2 class="" data-start="3080" data-end="3125">Tips to Make Your Elevator Pitch Stand Out</h2>
<p class="" data-start="3127" data-end="3202">Here are a few additional tips to make your 30-second pitch more impactful:</p>
