How to Motivate Yourself Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
By leadership author and keynote speaker Ross Shafer
Thanks for finding the Relevant Leaders Club, this is a resource for leaders who want to take away new ideas to boost your business and your career. It’s also a forum to help make everyone a better leader.
Today, I want to talk about how to motivate your team…even when you don’t feel like it. You’ve heard the cliché “it’s lonely it is at The Top.” It’s true. Until you are sitting in the leader’s chair you never realize how isolated it can feel. Truth is though, even top tier leaders need a little motivation and validation – at the same exact time you’re supposed to be leading the troops. So how do you pull that off?
FIRST: Realize that YOU set the tone for how your team members will affect your overall culture. From now on, Don’t complain and Don’t Blame. It’s inspiring for your team to see people at the top who don’t whine or make excuses and who are willing to take responsibility for their own success. Your team will take their cue from your actions.
SECOND: Show your team how easy it is to find fresh ideas and innovations – by looking at other industries. I have a system for harvesting new ideas that always works. Go to the wrong meetings. Go to a nearby hotel and see what topics are being discussed and by whom. Then, when everybody is walking into that meeting you follow them and stand in the back. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to get fresh ideas from organizations that are OUTSIDE of your industry.
THIRD: Be forthcoming about your failures so they can see that you’re not perfect – everybody makes mistakes and if they know that you have made mistakes too – they will trust you because you’re being authentic. Once they see you’re human, be forthcoming and tell them the details about what you did to turn failure into success.
